About AfterTaxCalculator

AfterTaxCalculator.uk is a free, independent tax calculator designed to help UK employees, freelancers, and contractors understand exactly how much of their salary they take home after income tax and National Insurance deductions. We launched in 2026 to address a simple problem: understanding your payslip shouldn't require a degree in accounting.

Why We Built This

Every year, millions of UK workers receive a salary offer, a pay rise, or a new contract rate — and their first question is always: "How much will I actually take home?" Existing government tools are slow, confusing, and don't provide the instant, visual breakdown that people need when making important financial decisions.

We created AfterTaxCalculator to provide clear, instant, and accurate answers. Whether you're negotiating a new salary, comparing job offers, planning a household budget, or simply curious about where your money goes, our calculator shows you the complete picture in seconds.

What We Calculate

Our calculator covers all the major deductions from a UK salary:

  • Income Tax — using the official 2025/26 HMRC tax bands for both England/Wales/NI and Scotland (which has different rates)
  • National Insurance — employee contributions at the current 8% and 2% rates
  • Student Loan Repayments — all plans including Plan 1, Plan 2, Plan 4 (Scotland), and Postgraduate Loan
  • Pension Contributions — salary sacrifice calculations that reduce your taxable income
  • Personal Allowance Taper — automatic reduction for earnings above £100,000

Accuracy and Data Sources

Our calculations use the official 2025/26 tax year rates published by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). We update our calculator at the start of each tax year (April 6th) to reflect any changes to tax bands, NI thresholds, and allowances. The calculator handles edge cases including the Personal Allowance taper for high earners, Scottish-specific tax bands, and multiple student loan plans.

Who Uses AfterTaxCalculator?

Our users include employees comparing job offers, HR professionals benchmarking compensation packages, recruiters explaining salary packages to candidates, financial advisers estimating client take-home pay, and individuals simply wanting to understand their payslip better.

Privacy and Data

All calculations happen entirely in your browser. We never see, store, or transmit your salary data. Your privacy is absolute — there are no accounts, no logins, and no personal data collection. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Disclaimer

This calculator provides estimates based on HMRC 2025/26 tax rates and should not be treated as financial advice. Individual circumstances vary — factors like benefits in kind, company car tax, salary sacrifice childcare vouchers, and Marriage Allowance transfers can affect your actual take-home pay.
